After young actress Marissa Budd, one of the stars of the movie Wicked, pointed out that the reaction to her disabled character on social media was disgusting, harmful and unpopular, Budd, who uses a wheelchair in real life and in the movie, took to her social media account to address the hate directed at her character Nessarose.

“It’s perfectly acceptable to not like a fictional character, but the comments were very hurtful,” Budd declared. “I will admit to being biased in the way that I feel about Nessa with very different feelings than a lot of you, and that’s okay. I think she’s a complex character in a different way, and that’s the beauty of art.”

“Wicked wouldn’t be what it is if there weren’t different opinions about the characters and who is really the villain or not,” Budd continued. “And the fact that Nessarose herself isn’t liked is a good thing, and it’s because she’s perfecting the role, because the character is fictional, and she’s not serious at all, and she doesn’t mind silly, goofy, harmless jokes, but the aggressive comments about the character’s disability were very uncomfortable.”
