Former England football captain David Beckham said he "never imagined I would be honoured like this" after being knighted in King Charles's Birthday Honours.

David Beckham, who was awarded an OBE in 2003, was knighted alongside actor Gary Oldman and The Who singer Roger Daltrey.

Sir David, who has been in the running for a knighthood for more than a decade, told the British Press Agency: “Growing up in east London with patriotic and proud British parents and grandparents, I never imagined I would receive this truly great honor. Playing for and captaining my country has been the greatest honor of my career and a childhood dream come true.”

Beckham is the only Englishman to have scored in three different World Cups, having won the historic treble (English Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League) with his team, Manchester United, in the 1998/1999 season.

Beckham is England's third-most-capped player of all time, having captained the team in 59 matches.
