Dr. Zaid Al-Samkari writes: Is Abu Ubaida’s face real or “artificial intelligence”? We reveal with scientific analysis

Recently, pictures spread revealing the face of “Abu Ubaida,” the spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement, but are these pictures real? We will explain surgical facial analysis, which enables us to determine whether a video is made by artificial intelligence or is real.

Together we will analyze the widespread image of “Abu Ubaida”, as a plastic surgeon who has dealt with thousands of human faces.

Rules and basics of facial analysis First, we will establish a rule of principle that, from a scientific standpoint, the human face is a complex palette of emotions, expressions, and identity, so there are basics that we will adhere to when analyzing the face medically.

Facial analysis is basically the process of extracting and interpreting data from images or videos of human faces. This data is then used to draw meaningful conclusions and insights. Here is a brief overview of the steps involved:

1.Face detection: The first step is to identify the face and determine its location within the photo or video frame. This often involves using machine learning algorithms to identify facial features such as the eyes, nose, and mouth, and sometimes a doctor specializing in anatomy or cosmetic medicine can determine approximate features even from under the veil!

2. Extracting what distinguishes the face, which can include the position of the eyes, the shape of the nose, the location of the chin, and so on.

3. Emotion analysis: by evaluating the curvature of the lips, the position of the eyebrows, and other facial changes

4. Age and Gender Estimation: Facial analysis can estimate a person's age group and gender based on specific facial characteristics

For example, drooping eyelids and a downward slanting eyebrow angle give an indication of aging, as do neck lines or wrinkles surrounding the mouth and thinning of the skin below the eyes.

5. Health indicators: Some facial features, such as eye color, skin tone and texture, can be an indicator of health status. For example, pale or jaundiced skin or yellowing of the cornea may indicate liver problems.

Let us apply these rules to the widespread image of “Abu Ubaida,” spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades I will touch on two aspects:

Nose shape

It is one of the most prominent features of the face. The nose consists of a bony part that meets the forehead and a cartilaginous part that constitutes approximately half the length of the nose and forms the nostrils and its tip.

The nose has more than nine different shapes, such as humpback, snub, fat, broad, straight, Nubian, Roman, high, and others.

It is clearly evident from under the mask and through analyzing the different angles that Abu Ubaida’s nose appears straight from its bony part and its cartilaginous part. This is the first sign that contradicts the image attributed to him, which reveals his face

Secondly, the location of the chin

The chin has several different shapes, as its location in relation to the mouth and nose varies among people, depending on their gender, ethnicity, and age group.

When I analyzed the location of the chin of the spokesman for the Al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas , in relation to its distance from the mouth and nose area, I was able to infer that the shape of the face is not full or round as it appears in the picture that was presented as that of the spokesman.
