Youssef Nasrallah shared a post by Shukry Sarhan’s grandson, Tarek Zamzam, on his personal Facebook account, which read: “I did not care about the matter despite being one of Shukry Sarhan’s grandsons, because I believe in freedom of opinion, and the impossibility of creativity submitting to absolute rule, and my conviction that Shukry Sarhan and his generation of Egyptian cinema builders have built a history that will not be shaken by the winds of opinions, no matter how strong their storms are.”

He continued, saying: “Events followed one another and I was surprised by the news circulating about the media spokesman for Shukri Sarhan’s family. We are not narrow-minded, so we do not accept the other opinion even if we disagree with it. The one who is most deserving of talking about Shukri Sarhan, if necessary, is Yahya Shukri Sarhan, followed by Shukri Sarhan’s siblings, including my father.”

Tarek Zamzam continued: “When it came to talking about complaints, reports, lawsuits, and the escalation of defamation against an artistic figure like Mr. Youssef Nasrallah, I contacted the older generation of the family and its figures to clarify the matter. I found that everyone did not know that they had a media spokesperson who was not related to the family, and most of them did not know what was happening. I remained silent in search of the family’s media spokesperson who claimed on his page and all the media outlets that his uncle was Shukry Sarhan.”

The truth about the existence of an official spokesman for Shukri Sarhan's family He added: "When I called him, I realized that he was not related to the family, and when he realized that I knew all the cousins, he told me that he belonged to another branch of the family in Damietta, even though the family does not have any branches outside the borders of the Sharqia Governorate, otherwise the artist Mohsen Sarhan, the writer Samir Sarhan, and Shukry Sarhan would belong to one family, and this is definitely not true, as each of them has his own family and separate roots."

He continued: "Apart from these details, he informed me that he was speaking on behalf of Shukri Sarhan's family only, not the family, with the authorization of Yahya Shukri Sarhan. The truth is that Yahya has been living in Australia for nearly twenty years, and unfortunately, over time, I lost any means of communication with him, like the rest of the family members. Out of respect for Yahya as a person and appreciation for any circumstances that I do not know about, he was prompted to authorize someone to speak on his behalf and on behalf of his father."

She continued: “If the incident is true, I asked the professor with utmost decisiveness to clarify this and stop insulting any artistic stature and confiscating opinions. I received a promise from him to clarify the matter and even an affirmation from him that the entire issue was over. He committed to clarifying it through a suspicious statement on his page. I was then surprised by the continuation of this farce. I only discovered a short while ago that the episode that caused all this absurd uproar had been broadcast for nearly a year and no one had heard of it.”

Shukry Sarhan's grandson: The goal is to achieve fame

He added: "There is no doubt that raising it at the present time aims to achieve fame or gains that only he knows from its effects. Finally, this is not a statement issued by a family. We are not an institution or an entity that issues statements or appoints a media spokesperson. Rather, it is merely a clarification and a personal opinion, even if the family members agree with it. I will never speak after it. It is more appropriate to talk about Shukry Sarhan or any of the symbols of art, which are the gentlemen critics and historians."

He concluded his speech by saying: “I grew up in a house that was open to all opinions, and I will never be a party to lowering the flag of freedom. Shukry Sarhan does not need anyone to defend him, as he has created a history that resembles a defensive arsenal.”
