He used to tell her not to eat spices or strain her throat by singing high notes. He also taught her how to recite the Quran, even though she was a Christian. Her father strongly rejected the idea of singing, but Fleifel convinced him with difficulty that she would participate in the television broadcast and that she would only sing national songs.
