He succeeded his father, Sultan Moulay Youssef, who died early on Thursday, Jumada I 22, 1346 AH, corresponding to November 17, 1927 AD. His son, Sidi Mohammed, was pledged allegiance to as Sultan of Morocco the following day after Friday prayers, Jumada I 23, 1346 AH, corresponding to November 18, 1927 AD, in the Royal Palace in Fez. He remained Sultan of Morocco until 1957 AD, during which he spent his exile between (1953-1955). He then took the title of King in 1957 AD and remained King until his death in 1961 AD. Sultan Mohammed V supported the struggles of the Moroccan national movement demanding the achievement of Independence, which led him to clash with the protectorate authorities. The result was that the protectorate authorities exiled him to Madagascar. Demonstrations subsequently erupted demanding his return to his homeland. Faced with the intensification of the demonstrations, the French authorities agreed to restore the Sultan to his throne on November 16, 1955. A few months later, Morocco's independence was declared. While his father, Sultan Moulay Youssef, spent most of his time in the capital, Rabat, the young prince, Sidi Mohammed, spent most of his time at the royal palace in Fez, where he received his traditional Moroccan education. This included religious Arabic lessons interspersed with lessons on the basics of French, a language he did not fully master, as the colonial language was essential for communicating with the representatives of the protectorate authorities. His only teacher was the jurist Mohammed al-Maamari, of Algerian origin, who had been brought to Morocco by the protectorate authorities. The British historian Rome Landau recounts that Moulay Mohammed's education was limited to traditional, traditional education, as he was initially considered unlikely to ascend the throne.</p>
