Opening of the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo

Ahmed Siam, Director General of the Museum of Islamic Art, inaugurated the temporary archaeological exhibition (In the Sanctuary of Beauty: Adornment and Perfume Across the Islamic Eras). He was joined in the opening by Engineer Omar Sharif, the creator of Sharif Beauté perfumes, a leading perfume company and the event's sponsor. The opening was attended by a group of cultural figures and a wide range of people interested in Islamic history.

Details of the exhibit at the Museum of Islamic Art The exhibition introduces visitors to the concept of beauty and adornment in Islamic civilization, starting with the beauty of nature and God's creation, the adornment of appearance, the architectural arts and their impact on creating harmony within the soul, the minds of Muslim scholars in the Middle Ages as the continuing adornment of the world in our current era, the beauty of morals derived from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and concluding with the arts of perfume and the beauty of their impact.

This is done through the display of 60 archaeological artifacts, the most important of which is a prayer rug of the Madhar Ladaq type, a Susannah Bukhara curtain made of cotton and silk, a page from the Al-Ghafiqi manuscript containing recipes for making kohl, and a distinguished collection of jewelry, most notably a Mamluk-era gold bracelet, in addition to a collection of perfume and rosewater vessels, a glass kohl pot attributed to the Mamluk era, and an Andalusian vase of the Alhambra style.

*The audience interacted with the show by trying these aromatic combinations, in addition to using VR technology to experience wandering inside a vision of one of the palaces of the Abassid dynasty.

*At the end, a series of audio and video clips were presented to the audience, expressing the exhibition's theme. The most important of these was a clip about the manufacture of Harun al-Rashid's paint, in addition to a musical segment accompanied by interaction among the audience through taking photographs inside the museum garden.

The exhibition will continue until the end of June, inside Temporary Exhibition Hall No. 1.
