Shahid Kapoor (born 25 February 1981) is an Indian actor who began his career by working in music videos and advertisements. He made his Bollywood debut with the romantic film Love and won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for his performance. He then went on to star in Fidaa and Al Qimma. His first major commercial success was with Sooraj Prajatya in the film Journey from Engagement to Marriage.

Shahid Kapoor received Filmfare Award for Best Actor nominations for his performances in When We Met and Scoundrels. He followed his success with roles in a series of commercially successful films before starring in A. R. Rajkumar.

Shahid Kapoor was born on 25 February 1981 to Pankaj Kapoor and actress and classical dancer Neelima Azeem. His parents separated when he was young. Shahid Kapoor lived with his mother, sister Sana and brother Ishaan Khattar in Delhi. He had a good relationship with his father Pankaj Kapoor and his wife Subbaraia Pathak.

Shahid Kapoor is reported to have studied in his childhood at Gyan Bharati School in Delhi till the fourth grade, from where he moved to Rajhans Vidyalaya School in Mumbai. Shahid Kapoor has three siblings: one sister named Sana Kapoor and two brothers named Ishaan Khattar and Rohan Kapoor.

Ishaan Khattar appeared with him in the blockbuster film This Is What Life Should Be Like! Kapoor's grandfather, Anwar Azeem, is a director, screenwriter, novelist, journalist, and author of Marxism, and lives in Bihar.

Before he started acting, Shahid Kapoor worked in many music videos and advertisements, including his Pepsi advertisement with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, his songs in the film Something Happened and the music video Right in Front of Your Eyes.

Shahid Kapoor joined the Shimak Davar Institute of Performing Arts (SDIPA) in 1995, where he appeared in Subhash Ghai's Taal (1999) as a background dancer in the song Kahin Aaj Laage Laage Jawi opposite Aishwarya Rai. He opted out of the academy in 2001, and also stopped appearing in commercials and music videos around this time, so that he could focus on making his Bollywood debut.

In 2003, Shahid Kapoor played Rajiv Mathur, a young man who inspired director Ken Ghosh's romantic love story, his first notable role. He appeared opposite Amrita Rao as Shehnaaz Trisliwala in the film, which was well received by audiences, and Kapoor won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for his performance in the film.

In 2004, Shahid Kapoor teamed up with director Ken Ghosh again in the film Fida, co-starring Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. The film did well at the box office, but Kapoor's performance in the film was described as outstanding. He then appeared in the romantic comedy The Heart Wants More opposite Soha Ali Khan as Tulip Joshi and Ayesha Takia.

The film was a success, with Rediff.com writing that Kapoor tends to imitate Shah Rukh Khan, and that he does it well in some scenes, but overdoes it in others. By 2005, Kapoor had made three films, but none of them were successful.

In 2006, Shahid Kapoor starred in 36 China Street, a story about seven people accused of murder. The film was a moderate success despite receiving poor reviews from critics, but shortly after its release, the second film of the year, the comedy Quietly, Quietly, was a moderate box office success. The last film of 2006 was the romantic drama Journey from Engagement to Marriage, a film depicting the story of two couples on their way to marriage.

Shahid Kapoor co-starred with Amrita Rao in the film, which was well received by most critics, and became one of the most successful films of the year, as well as Shahid Kapoor's biggest commercial success to date. Shahid Kapoor was nominated for Best Actor at the Star Screen Awards for the second time in a row for his performance.

During the summer of 2006, Shahid Kapoor went on his first international tour to attend the Rockstar concert, accompanying Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, John Abraham, Esha Deol, Mallika Sherawat and Zayed Khan.

In 2007, Shahid Kapoor appeared in two films. The first was Deception and The End. The film received negative reviews and failed to do well at the box office and Shahid Kapoor's performance in the film was not well received by critics. The second film of the year, the romantic comedy When We Met, opposite Kareena Kapoor, became one of the best films of the year.

In 2010, Shahid Kapoor appeared in the film Dance Chance opposite Genelia D'Souza, the story of the film revolves around a person who wants to become an actor and the film shows us the difficulty of entering the film industry. Although the film received good reviews from critics, the film was not a commercial success, but Shahid Kapoor's performance was good. He then starred in School as Rahul Prakash alongside Ayesha Takia and Nana Patekar. This was followed by the Yash Raj Films film Company Production was delayed since 2005, the film failed at the box office, and received negative reviews from critics. Starting in October 2013, Shahid Kapoor signed on to appear with director Vishal Bhardwaj in William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, titled Haider. The film wrapped up filming in April 2014, with Shraddha Kapoor, Tabby and K.K. Menon.
