The Pledge of Allegiance to Al-Hasan ibn Ali and the Division of the Ummah... Muawiyah Series, Episode 16

Episode 16 of the Muawiyah series continued where the previous episode ended, as Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan and Amr ibn al-Aas survived an assassination attempt plotted by the Kharijites, while Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib was martyred from his wounds.

As soon as the news spread, grief spread throughout Kufa, and a new phase of unrest began.

On the other hand, the series showed the feelings of grief that overwhelmed Muawiyah after the martyrdom of Imam Ali, as he mourned him with words that reflected his respect for him, saying: We fought as knights in battle, and our swords differed, but our hearts did not differ. We hoped to establish justice, but we did not hope to end up as factions torn apart by the swords of treachery.

The pledge of allegiance to Al-Hasan ibn Ali and the division of the nation After the death of Imam Ali, the people of Kufa pledged allegiance to his son, Al-Hasan ibn Ali, as Caliph of the Muslims, while the people of the Levant declared their allegiance to Muawiyah, which increased the intensity of the division.

As tensions escalated, some of Hassan's advisors suggested preparing an army to head towards Syria. Meanwhile, Muawiyah decided to march with his army to confront Hassan, with the aim of ending the conflict and stopping the bloodshed.

To prevent the outbreak of fighting, Muawiyah sent a messenger to Ubayd Allah ibn Abbas, the commander of al-Hasan's army, to persuade him to join him in exchange for a large financial offer, in a move intended to pave the way for a peace treaty.

Indeed, Al-Hasan bin Ali agreed to the agreement, on the condition that Muawiyah would abide by God’s law and maintain the security of the people of Kufa, which Muawiyah pledged to do, promising Al-Hasan that the caliphate would be his after him.

How did episode 16 of Muawiyah series end? After the peace treaty was concluded, Muawiyah assumed the caliphate and began to calm the situation, adopting a policy based on uniting Muslims, ensuring proper management of their affairs, and avoiding any decisions that might lead to further disputes.

He also advised the Umayyads to deal wisely with everyone to avoid mistakes that might reignite strife.

The episode represented a pivotal moment in Islamic history, highlighting the importance of wisdom and negotiation in resolving conflicts, rather than resorting to war, which would have led to further division among Muslims.
